Take Heart
When Christ said, Take heart! I have overcome the world. What did he mean? This is an important question to ask when we are faced with reports of another variant of the coronavirus virus in the Caribbean. Our fears are real and warranted. Our grief is real as everyone knows someone close who was infected, critically ill or has died from this awful virus. Not to mention all the other personal and public hardships that come with living and trying our best to keep safe.
John 16:33 in its entirety says, I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. At a time when Jesus knew he would die and that his death would cause grief and confusion, he encouraged the disciples to find their security in him. If you read more of the chapter, they confessed belief that Jesus came from God.
During this time of uncertainty and unrest, Jesus encourages us to look to him for peace. He said then, and we need to hear now, Take heart. We certainly have many troubles, but Christ overcame the troubles of mortality—death, grief—and the unfairness of suffering and losing his life when he didn’t do anything wrong.
Take heart and take all of your burdens and fears to Christ.
